ICAS evening meetups are starting again - please read

23 Aug 2020 by Ed Gilmore

The good news: ICAS evening meetups at the reach are back! Look out for them in the calendar section of the app/website soon…

The bad news: There are only 6 places only per meet up – and you HAVE TO BOOK your place in advance – just like we do with pubs and restaurants. Why? We are following the model used by instructors on courses at the Reach. It is so attendees can social distance properly, which may not be possible if lots of ICAS climbers arrive at the same place at the same time. Please respect this rule. Hopefully it will be a temporary measure, and we will adapt as things progress.

More good news: We’re kicking off with 2 meetups on hosted nights! One for top rope climbers, and one for lead climbers.

Even more good news: There are sensible work arounds for the 6 place limit at each meetup. Read on to find out how.

MEETUP 1 – Top rope climbers:
★WHEN? 7:00PM prompt! Please arrive ready to climb, ideally with your gear on. There won’t be any hanging around so if you aren’t going to make it for any reason, please cancel your booking on the app so someone else can have it. See ‘Great to know’ below, to find out how to climb with us if 7PM doesn’t work for you, or the meet is full.
★WHO? Booked in members who want to climb TOP ROPE.
★WHERE? By the ICAS sign downstairs (NOT at the cafe as we used to meet).

MEETUP 2 Lead climbers:
★WHEN? 7:30PM prompt! Please arrive ready to climb, ideally with your gear on. There won’t be any hanging around so if you aren’t going to make it for any reason, please cancel your booking on the app so someone else can have it.
★WHO? Booked in members who want to LEAD CLIMB for some, or all of the evening.
★WHERE? By the ICAS sign downstairs (NOT at the cafe as we used to meet).

GOOD TO KNOW:
★These meet ups are just for climbers who are ready and ABLE to climb safely. If you think your belaying may be a bit ‘rusty’ after the lockdown break, please polish it up before booking a place.
★If you have not climbed with ICAS before, and this is your first time with us, please book a space on the 7PM top rope meet. An ICAS host needs to check your belaying in order to provide you with access to the rest of our events and calendar.
★You MUST book a place for each meet up via the the calendar in the ICAS app/website to attend an organised meetup. Please do not come to the official meet if you have not pre-booked a place on the app. See ‘Great to know’ (below) for a great alternative to organised meetups!
★You are responsible for your own safety at all times. Check yourself and your partner every climb. If you are unsure of anything, ask a member of Reach staff to clarify – they are lovely people, and are there to help all of us stay safe and have fun.

GREAT TO KNOW:
★If the meet up is full, or you want to climb before, or later than the official meetup time, you CAN still meet and climb with other lovely ICAS members that night – or whenever you want!* HOW? You have 2 options:
☆Option 1: Post in the [full] meetup’s comments that you are also available to climb. It’s probably the first place other members who want to climb at that time will look. ICAS Hosts may also post there if a place becomes available.
☆Option 2*: Open up the app/website, go to ‘CHAT’, open the chat called ‘Climb with me!’ Then simply post what day and time you’re looking for a climbing partner. With a bit of luck there will be other climbers in the same boat as you and they will reply to you. Don’t be shy!
*If you are a provisional member, you won’t see the ‘Climb with me!’ chat until your belaying has been approved and logged by an ICAS host. If you’ve already been belay approved and can’t see the chat, contact an ICAS host.

GREAT TO DO:
★Please remember to respect current government and Reach’s Covid-19 guidance at any informally arranged meets.

☺SEE YOU VERY SOON!☺
